    Ambassador and U.S. Embassy LIKE Facebook cooperation with Lulea

    On February 2, Ambassador Brzezinski was pleased to be invited by Norrbotten Landshövding Per-Ola Eriksson and Luleå kommunalråd Karl Petersen to visit the new Facebook Data Center under construction in Luleå. This will be Facebook’s first data center outside the United States.

    Ambassador Brzezinski visits SAAB

    On the visit, the Ambassador was shown the Next Generation Gripen fighter demonstrator, and was briefed on the extensive partnerships between Saab and a host of U.S. companies, and on the significant content of U.S. systems and components in the Gripen fighter.

    US Energy Secretary and 1997 Nobel Laureate Steven Chu Visited Stockholm

    During his visit, Chu met with Swedish government, business and scientific leaders, and attended the Nobel price ceremonies.

    On Friday, November 18 The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) hosted a panel discussion on commercializing university innovations. The session was organized under the auspices of the Swedish American Green Alliance (SAGA).

    Intercultural Forum on Domestic Violent Extremism

    In the first of a series of Intercultural Forums, 65 people, representing the Government of Sweden, the business community, legal professionals etc, convened to discuss and compare U.S. and Swedish experiences with domestic violent extremism.

    On September 23, the Embassy and Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Stewart hosted a reception for key International Voluntary Leadership Program (IVLP) alumni policy makers and advisors from the Riksdag, government ministries, think-tanks, and local government.

    Sharing experiences on countering extremism

    The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm recently invited Sergeant Mike Abdeen, a 20-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, to come to Sweden and share his experiences with minority outreach and efforts to prevent violent extremism in diverse communities.

    The Role of Social Media

    While visiting Stockholm to address a conference of Sweden’s ambassadors, Secretary Hillary Clinton’s Senior Advisor on Innovation Alec Ross also spoke to a group of about 30 business, NGO representatives, and government leaders at an event organized by Prime PR.

    Communication Technologies and Foreign Policy

    Secretary Hillary Clinton’s Senior Advisor on Innovation Alec Ross was in Stockholm August 23 at the invitation of Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to speak with Sweden’s ambassadors from around the world on the role of new communication technologies in foreign policy.

    Opening of New UPS Jarfalla Logistics Center

    U.S. Embassy Chargé d’affaires William Stewart participated in the opening of the new Järfälla UPS Logistics Center, the Nordic hub for UPS operations and very advanced in design, security, and efficiency operations.

    Celebrating Independence Day

    The Embassy celebrated U.S. Independence Day a bit early this year so that Ambassador and Mrs. Barzun could be part of the fun before departing Sweden. We were honored to welcome about 1,200 guests for an American-style backyard party.

    Reaching Out to the Next Generation

    As the new school year started in Janaury 2011, so did a new Embassy outreach program where Ambassador Barzun traveled to high schools to listen to and engage in dialogue with the next generation of Swedish leaders.

    Honoring the 2010-2011 Fulbright Grantees

    At a reception, Ambassador Barzun honored the 2010-2011 U.S. Fulbright Grantees and their work here in Sweden. After the keynote speeches, each of the 10 U.S. grantees were able to give a short talk about their experiences here in Sweden.

    Ambassador visits Lulea

    Visiting Luleå, the Ambassador spoke to students at Luleå Tekniska Universitet, met with Mayor Karl Petersen, and made a long-term loan of two artworks by native artists from Alaska to highlight the cultural connection between Sweden and the United States.

    Ambassador Honors U.S. Photographer at House of Photography in Stockholm

    On March 10 Fotografins Hus opened an exhibit dedicated to U.S. photographer Richard Renaldi. Known for a his projects depicting the relationship between humans and their environment, Renaldi was present and provided insights about his work thanks to an Embassy grant .

    Center for American Progress Senior Fellow in Sweden to Talk U.S. Climate Policy

    In a presentation hosted by think-tanks Cogito and Arenagruppen in Stockholm, Dr. Light put special emphasis on regional and state initiatives in the United States such as the existing cap and trade system in the Northeast - the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

    Presenting a Voice of Moderation through Media

    Zahed Amanullah, Editor-in-Chief of www.altmuslim.com, visited Gothenburg and Stockholm from March 8-11, 2011 to conduct several media training sessions with representatives from Swedish Muslims for Peace and Justice, who are actively developing their media arm.

    Visiting Södertörns Högskola, Ambassador Barzun challenged Political Science majors and the Foreign Policy Committee (UF) students to rethink U.S. Diplomacy.

    Embassy Hockey Team Faced Tough Resistance Against Tyreso

    The Embassy Hockey Team – Team USA – will be facing off against the embassies of Russia, Canada, Finland and the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a lead up to that tournament, Team USA was challenged by Tyresö’s 10-year olds on Wednesday evening.

    Keepin the Beat

    In celebration of February as African-American History Month in the United States, current American Fulbright Scholar Mamie Hyatt hosted “Keepin’ the Beat: An Afternoon with James Bradley Jr.” at Galleri Duerr in Stockholm.

    Swedish American Green Alliance (SAGA) One Year Anniversary

    During the year since it was launched, a network of nearly one hundred official SAGA partners has been established and over 600 examples of sustainability innovations have been posted on the SAGA web platform - sagastory.blogspot.com.

    Talking Climate Change at Globala Gymnasiet

    Kicking off his youth outreach program, Ambassador Barzun visited Globala gymnasiet in Stockholm to discuss climate change issues with the students there along with Sweden’s Climate Change Ambassador Staffan Tillander.

    All Different: A Profitable Business Strategy

    During ‘Södertälje Business Days’, a two-day fair from February 16 to 17, 2011, many members of the Embassy community were able to share their experiences and insights into diversity and entrepreneurship in the United States.
